A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL:

The English-medium school Groote Schuur High School (GSHS) was founded in 1959 as a co-educational Afrikaans High School in the leafy of Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the years, pupil numbers have increased and after the addition of six extra classrooms in 2011, the numbers have grown to 800 learners. The history of the school shows a spirit of enterprise, realism and adaptability. In 1991 it became the first public Afrikaans high school in South Africa with a broad admissions policy. Since 2011 all tuition at Groote Schuur High School is in English only.

- maintain a balance between spiritual, academic, cultural and sporting activities.

The school’s facilities
All of the school’s classrooms are equipped with state-of-the- art interactive whiteboards. There is a fully equipped computer laboratory, four science and life science laboratories, an 900–seater hall and an auditorium. The school has two sports fields: Inversnaid Sports Field and Vredenhof Sports Field; four tennis courts, netball courts, a water polo pool and a club house at Vredenhof Field.

The Sports Academy
The Sports Academy has been established for the purpose of empowering local sports talented youth. It is our desired goal to harness the natural talent of our youth sports boys and girls local to areas within the Western Cape by making the Academy available to learners with good academic records and football talents from various schools.

We endeavour to support a lasting change in the lifestyle of the participating player. The Academy subscribes to a holistic approach in its chosen methodology of coaching. Not only do we target the enhancement of sporting skills, we also focus our attention on all areas of the participant’s life such as education and personal development.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SPORT ACADEMY:

In 2014 GSHS initiated a Sports Academy focussing primarily on schools within the region of the school. However, there was a dire need to extend the offering to include schools that are not traditional feeder schools. Based on the success of our inaugural soccer festival, the school saw the need for well-resourced schools to provide sport and academic opportunities to disadvantaged learners.
We endeavour to support a lasting change in the lifestyle of the participating player. The Academy subscribes to a holistic approach in its chosen methodology of coaching. Not only do we enhance sporting skills, we also pay attention to all areas of the participant’s life such as education and personal development. Through this process we hope to create opportunities for potential sports stars to not only excel on the playing field but also to create individuals who will become significant contributors in society.
